The attorney general, elected in November, will discuss the important role AGs play in the current national political climate.

Washington Attorney General Nick Brown has a message to Washington, D.C.: “Follow the damn law.”

The recently elected Washington Attorney General will join Ï㽶´«Ã½ President Eduardo Peñalver and Professional-in-Residence Joni Balter on campus to discuss his time thus far as AG and the implications and impact of what’s happening in the other Washington on the day-to-day lives of Washingtonians. The event—the latest in the —is 2–3 p.m., May 6 , in the Oberto Room at the Jim and Janet Sinegal Center for Science and Innovation.

This is the last guest speaker of the quarterly series, which is presented by the Ï㽶´«Ã½ Department of Public Affairs and Leadership.

“I am excited to meet Attorney General Nick Brown and hear how he is managing his first elected job and the basic expectations of a new AG,” says Balter. “I also hope the audience comes away better understanding how and when Brown and other Democratic attorneys general decide to challenge the new federal government to protect the values of their states.”

In fact, Brown is no stranger to challenging the Trump Administration. During the first six months of the first Trump Administration, at the direction of then-Governor Jay Inslee, Brown worked directly with Inslee and then-Attorney General Bob Ferguson in taking on Trump’s early actions, including his Muslim Ban, a lawsuit that led to a nationwide Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) in February 2017.

Washington state’s 19th Attorney General, Brown began his legal career in the Army JAG Corps and returned to Washington state to be a prosecutor. He then served as lead counsel to Governor Inslee and then in private practice before, in 2021, being appointed U.S. Attorney for Western Washington by President Joe Biden.

According to the Attorney General’s website, Brown’s “focus is on getting results that benefit Washington state residents and tangibly improve their lives. His key areas of focus include protecting public safety, advancing environmental and worker protections, standing up for civil rights and holding the powerful to account when they violate our laws and harm the people of our state.”
